Bud Cauley carries a laminated four-leaf clover in his golf bag, a gift from his grandfather who found it in his yard. The lucky charm had failed to deliver a PGA Tour victory until Cauley pulled away from the field down the stretch of the RBC Canadian Open to grab win No. 1 in start 239.

A couple of well-played mid irons and a hole out fueled Cauley’s back-nine run. At the par-3 11th he struck a 7-iron that went 206 yards before trickling to within four feet for birdie. On the following hole it appeared he might give the stroke back but holed his shot with his Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks lob wedge for another birdie. Cauley was fourth in strokes gained/around the green, picking up nearly three shots on the field.

Cauley made it three in a row with a 6-iron from 216 yards at the 13th to 13 feet and dropped that putt as well. Cauley’s irons are Titleist’s 620 MB model with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts.

For the week Cauley picked up nearly eight strokes on the field on the greens with his Scotty Cameron by Titleist GoLo 7 S1 tour prototype putter, a center-shafted, rounded mallet.

Asked after the third round about what his emotions might be like after his first win, Cauley said, “I don’t know. I don’t really want to think about that now. I guess we’ll find out when that day happens.”

That day has now happened. With an assist from a lucky charm.
