‘Animals’ (2026)

Ben Affleck returns to the director’s chair with the crime thriller Animals. The film follows independent political candidate Mark Kimball (Affleck), who becomes entangled in a dangerous plot after his son is apparently kidnapped on Halloween night while trick-or-treating with her maid and her boyfriend’s son. The ensemble cast also includes Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, and Luis Gerardo Mendez. Despite the incredible cast, Animals is not the best thriller you’ll watch this year. Still, committed performances and Affleck’s direction make it a great movie to watch on a Friday night. – David Caballero

‘Sacrifice’ (2026)

Romain Gavras‘ adventure dramedy Sacrifice premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival before debuting on Netflix in early October 2026. The film centers on a washed-up star attempting to make a comeback who attends a prestigious fundraiser on a Greek Island. However, the event is hijacked by a cult that believes three people must be sacrificed to prevent an apocalyptic volcanic eruption. Sacrifice is an eat-the-rich satirical comedy with an impressive ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Vincent Cassel, John Malkovich, and Salma Hayek. – David Caballero

‘The Whisper Man’ (2026)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/whisperman.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

The crime thriller The Whisper Man is among the most unnerving movies of the year. Robert De Niro is in fine shape as Peter Willis, a retired detective who returns to the field after his grandson is kidnapped by a killer imitating the MO of another infamous serial killer, The Whisper Man, who Willis caught decades earlier. Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, Owen Teague, and Michael Keaton round out the cast. The Whisper Man is a throwback to the ’90s thrillers that once took over the world, and director James Ashcroft‘s atmospheric approach makes it all the more effective as a chilling killer thriller. – David Caballero

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2006)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/the-devil-wears-prada-miranda-priestley-1.jpeg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

With the long-awaited sequel coming out earlier this year, now might be the perfect time to revisit Miranda Priestly in all her original glory. An Oscar-nominated Meryl Streep plays Priestly, the ruthless and icy Editor-in-Chief at Runway Magazine. Her new assistant, Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway), is straight out of college and in for a rude awakening as she attempts to satisfy Miranda’s demanding, all-consuming needs. The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s, benefiting from scene-stealing performances from Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci and a screenplay full of biting yet hilarious zingers. It’s always a great time to watch Streep command the screen while delivering the withering phrase, “That’s all.” – David Caballero

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (2022)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/top-gun-maverick-tom-cruise.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Few movies in the 2020s have been as big a cultural phenomenon as Top Gun: Maverick. Who would’ve thought that the sequel to a cheesy yet unimpressive ’80s flick would command such acclaim from critics and audiences 36 years later? Tom Cruise is back as Peter “Maverick” Mitchell, who must train a new generation of pilots to undertake a dangerous but important mission. The iconic star is ably supported by a talented cast of young talent, but make no mistake, this one is his movie from beginning to end, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Top Gun: Maverick was a box office juggernaut and even received a Best Picture nomination. – David Caballero

‘Gladiator II’ (2024)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/sharedimages/2025/11/paul-mescal-feels-sand-in-his-hands-in-gladiator-2.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

And speaking of sequels that were years in the making, 2024 saw the debut of Gladiator II. As the name suggests, it’s the sequel to Ridley Scott‘s Best Picture-winning hit Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe in the titular role. The sequel drops Crowe and replaces him with Paul Mescal as Lucius, son of the previous protagonist and the exiled prince of Rome, who becomes a gladiator for Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave planning to overthrow the sibling emperors. Gladiator II doesn’t exactly match its predecessor in terms of quality, but it still delivers a thrilling experience for fans of epic cinema. Plus, Washington is chewing the scenery left and right, which is always great to see. – David Caballero

‘Frankenstein’ (2025)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/frankenstein-jacob-elordi.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Guillermo del Toro‘s most recent offering, the Oscar-nominated Frankenstein, is another retelling of Mary Shelley‘s classic. As expected from the Oscar-winning writer and director, this version of the classic tale has far more sympathy (and interest) for the Creature, played by an Oscar-nominated Jacob Elordi. The film’s lush production values are a delight to witness, and del Toro’s passion for the material practically overflows through the screen. Far more Gothic romance than straight-up horror, del Toro’s Frankenstein is a modern interpretation of a well-known classic that doesn’t rediscover anything in the material but still compels us to appreciate it under a new light. – David Caballero

‘The Old Guard 2’ (2025)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/sharedimages/2026/06/old-guard-2-s-rotten-tomatoes-audience-score-breaks-charlize-theron-s-7-year-streak-1-1.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

The long-awaited sequel to the action-packed 2020 movie based on the comic series of the same name is finally here. Bruised by the chaos of the first outing, Charlize Theron‘s Andy is back to tackle her own identity, as well as the biggest foe she and her fellow warriors have ever faced. A classic, fast-paced action tale, The Old Guard 2 might not threaten during awards season, but for those looking for an entertaining, punch-throwing Sunday viewing experience, look no further than this popcorn flick. – Jake Hodges

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ (2025)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/kpop-demon-hunters-2025-poster.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />
    Image via Netflix</figure>

One of the highest-rated new arrivals on Netflix in 2025, KPop Demon Hunters follows the trio of Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), better known as KPop band Huntrix. With their music having the power to hunt demons, their enemies retaliate in the most musical way possible. Visually stunning and utterly immersive, KPop Demon Hunters is fun for fans of both the music itself and the fantasy genre. A success on both Netflix and Spotify, you’ll come for the music and stay for the characters. – Jake Hodges

‘I’m Still Here’ (2024)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/sharedimages/2026/04/eunice-cries-in-i-m-still-here-still-2.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

One of the best movies of last year, Walter Salles‘ I’m Still Here follows the life of Eunice (Fernanda Torres), the wife of a former Brazilian politician whose world is turned upside down following a military dictatorship taking over and sending her family into turmoil. An expansive, detailed depiction of a spiraling woman’s desperate attempts to glue the cracks in her family back together, I’m Still Here is as touching as it is tense. It more than deserved its Academy Award win and several other nominations. – Jake Hodges
