Texas high school football team's 19-year district win streak comes to end

It had been 19 years — nearly 7,000 days — since Aledo High School last lost a district football game.

Now, it has been 0 days.

Aledo, which was realigned this year from the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) 5A to District 3-6A, fell to Martin (Arlington, TX) 35-21 on Friday, Sept. 25, ending its in-district winning streak at 136 games.

It was the longest such streak in the country.

Aledo led 21-13 entering the fourth quarter, but Martin returned a punt 77 yards to the house to open the quarter, according to the Dallas Morning News. Martin took the lead on a 13-yard touchdown pass from QB Chase Devoll to WR Malik Mason and a two-point conversion by RB Julian Deloera.

The Warriors maintained control, overcoming an impressive outing by Aledo RB Wyatt Dorsey, who carried the ball 20 times for 210 yards and a touchdown.

With that, a streak that had likely been in place since before any player on either team was born — Oct. 5, 2007 — was snapped.

Aledo falls to 2-3 on the season. The Bearcats lost their first two games before rolling over Trinity and Granbury, outscoring the opponents by a combined 100-7. Martin, which improved its record to 5-0, showed a different type of strength in the fourth quarter, and has now won more games than the entirety of last season.

The world’s a much different place now than in October 2007. The No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, Fernando Mendoza, had just turned 4. The iPhone had only been out for a few months. The Great Recession had yet to begin. LeBron James … well, he’s still in the league.

Aledo will now set its eyes on a new streak. Maybe the world will be just as different once that ends, too.
