Texas A&M's talented pitching staff could be 'one of the best' in 2027
Texas A&M’s 2026 college baseball season was a step in the right direction under then-second-year coach Michael Earley, as the Aggies made it back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the postseason in 2025, led by a productive batting lineup; but due to early-season pitching injuries, the Aggies’ depth on the mound, combined with Shane Sdao’s struggles, resulted in an early exit in the College Station Regional after losing to USC.
However, redshirt junior pitcher Clayton Freshcorn was brilliant in his 27 appearances, finishing with a 2.82 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 54 innings. Texas A&M‘s lack of hitting did the Aggies in against USC during Freshcorn’s first career start, where he lasted 6.2 innings and produced six strikeouts. Combined with sophomore Aiden Sims’ highly encouraging first starting season, Texas A&M’s pitching rotation is in great shape.
Many, including myself, believed that Freshcorn was headed to the MLB, but after going in the 19th round of the St. Louis Cardinals, Freshcorn announced his return for the 2027 season, which will be his final year with the program, while the hiring of new pitching coach Barry Enright sparked momentum in the transfer portal after Shane Sdao and fellow starting pitcher Weston Moss were selected in the fourth and 11th rounds of the MLB Draft.
Michael Earley and Barry Enright landed six pitchers from the transfer portal, including former Texas State star freshman Wade Cooper, who could become the third starting pitcher behind Clayton Freshcorn and Aiden Sims. On Thursday, Freshcorn told the local media that the 2027 pitching staff has a chance to be “one of the best” under Barry Enright. Here are the new pitching additions from the transfer portal:
- Johnny Nuanez (Wichita State) — RHP
- Caleb Kimble (Houston) — RHP
- Wade Cooper (Texas State) — RHP
- Logan Prisco (South Carolina) — LHP
- Jarrett Williams (Lamar) — LHP
- Trent Collier (Oklahoma) — LHP
