Texas A&M’s Kyndal Stowers nominated for ESPY Best Comeback Athlete

· · 1 min read

One of the most compelling storylines in college sports this year has been the rise of Texas A&M outside hitter Kyndal Stowers. Her journey from being medically retired to becoming the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player has now earned national recognition on one of sports’ biggest stages.

On Thursday, it was announced that Stowers will attend the 2024 ESPYs as a nominee for Best Comeback Athlete, a fitting honor for one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent collegiate athletics.

Stowers’ comeback began after a difficult freshman season at Baylor, where multiple concussions led the program to medically retire her. Stepping away from volleyball allowed her to reset, refocus, and eventually rediscover her love for the game. When she was ready to return, Texas A&M head coach Jamie Morrison welcomed her but only after a series of safety benchmarks were met to ensure she could compete without risk.

Once cleared, Stowers flourished. She quickly became one of the nation’s premier outside hitters, helping lead the Aggies to their first-ever NCAA national championship. Her postseason dominance earned her the NCAA’s top individual honor, and in February, she was selected to the USA Women’s National Collegiate Training Team, further cementing her rise.
