Texas A&M unveiling statue for legendary coach R.C. Slocum

· · 1 min read

When you talk about the history of Texas A&M football, a handful of names always rise to the top. E. King Gill, the original 12th Man. John David Crow, the program’s first Heisman winner. Johnny Manziel, the first freshman in NCAA history to win the award. And when the conversation shifts to coaches, one figure stands above everyone else. R. C. Slocum.

On Monday, it was revealed that Slocum will be honored with a statue that will be unveiled on September 4, 2016, at the north end of Kyle Field beside the All-American Towers. Longtime sculptor Steven White created the piece, which will stand ten feet tall as a permanent tribute to the most successful coach in program history.

Slocum’s career speaks for itself. He won three Southwest Conference titles and one Big 12 championship. He earned three SWC Coach of the Year honors and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

After his coaching career ended, he continued to serve the university, stepping in twice as interim Athletic Director in 2019 and again in 2024. He officially retired on January 2, 2025, closing out a remarkable 53-year career that helped shape Texas A&M athletics into what it is today.

This recognition is more than deserved and it reflects the lasting impact Slocum made on Aggieland.
