Texas A&M track & field hires Leroy Burrell as head coach

The Texas A&M track & field program has hired Leroy Burrell as its head coach, they announced on Sunday night. Burrell spent the past four seasons as head coach of the Auburn Tigers, leading them to a top-five finish in all four years.

“We are excited to welcome Leroy and his family to Aggieland,” athletic director Trev Alberts said. “He is an outstanding leader that has achieved championship-level success everywhere he has been. He has developed elite athletes that have won on both the national and international stages. An Olympic gold medalist and national champion himself, he has a strong understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level. We are confident he will continue to build on the great success and tradition of our track & field program.”

Burrell spent 23 seasons as head coach of the Houston Cougars before taking over Auburn, leading his alma mater to great success. He won 44 conference titles with Houston and had seven top-10 results, including three inside the top five.

He is coming off an excellent season at Auburn, with the Tigers winning four individual national titles, six conference titles, and receiving 31 All-America honors. They broke the collegiate record in the 4×100 meter relay and the NCAA and world record in the 110 meter hurdles.

Burrell was a decorated sprinter before getting into coaching and won gold at the 1992 Olympics in the 4×100 meter relay. He won the world championships in the same event in 1991 and 1993, winning silver in the 100 meters in 1991 as well.
