Texas A&M freshmen running backs expected play vs. Kentucky

Before Texas A&M kicks off Week 3 of the 2026 season against Kentucky on Saturday afternoon, the latest injury report lists sophomore running back Jamarion Morrow and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman as “doubtful” for the matchup, with a 25% chance of suiting up.

Potentially losing Bethel-Roman for a game isn’t the end of the world, given the depth at wide receiver, but if Jamarion Morrow does not play on Saturday, junior RB Rueben Owens will likely retain his starting job, while freshmen backs KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker are fully expected to receive more snaps, which this writer has been clamoring for since the season opener.

Last Saturday’s 48-20 win over Arizona State was led by the Aggies’ elite second-half defense, which included two pick-sixes from Edge Marco Jones and cornerback Julio Humphrey, while the offense produced a measly 255 yards and just 92 rushing yards.

Fixing the Aggie run game starts with better blocking upfront, but each back needs to do a better job running behind blocks; every time KJ Edwards has touched the field, he’s averaged at least seven yards per carry thanks to elite burst and improved vision, which, in my humble opinion, garners more playing time despite his youth and inexperience.

Given the latest injury report, I expect Edwards to receive the bulk of the carries behind Rueben Owens, which could provide the run game an instant spark and open up the passing attack for Marcel Reed.
