Texans finalize rookie draft class, sign fourth-round OL Febechi Nwaiwu

The final member of the Houston Texans‘ draft class has signed his rookie contract.

According to KRPC 2 Sports’ Aaron Wilson, the Texans and fourth-round pick Febechi Nwaiwu have agreed to terms on a deal. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is a four-year, $5.625 million contract.

A two-year starter for Oklahoma, Nwaiwu is considered to be a multi-use starter who excels in run blocking and could shift inside to center full-time. A second-team All-SEC last season, the former North Texas walk-on started 11 games at right guard and two at center.

He also allowed just six pressures and one sack against John Mateer as Oklahoma secured its first College Football Playoff berth under Brent Venables en route to a 10-win season.

“The Texans are a physical team, and I’m a physical player,” Nwaiwu told reporters via Zoom following his selection in April. “They’re a detail-oriented team, and I’m a detail-oriented player. I think me and the Texans have the same things in common.”

Houston, which drafted do-it-all lineman Keylan Rutledge out of Georgia Tech in the first round, likely has the intent of letting Nwaiwu battle it out for second-team reps at either guard position. If anything, he could become the next Juice Scruggs and a player who sees action at both guard and center as a depth piece.
