Tempo’s Marina Mabrey scores 53 points, ties WNBA single-game record

Marina “Money” Mabrey made good on her nickname Thursday night.

Mabrey scored 53 points in the Toronto Tempo’s 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, which ties the WNBA’s single-game scoring record previously set by Liz Cambage and four-time MVP A’ja Wilson.

Cambage set the mark as a member of the Dallas Wings playing against the New York Liberty on July 17, 2018. Wilson matched Cambage’s historic scoring output on Aug. 22, 2023, in the Las Vegas Aces’ game against the Atlanta Dream.

“None of this happens without my teammates,” Mabrey said on the broadcast postgame. “They really found me. For a 3-point shooter, you need your teammates to set screens and deliver the pass. That’s what they did.”

Mabrey knocked down nine of her 18 3-point attempts, which ties the WNBA’s single-game record for made threes. She was 17 of 28 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.

She set the tone for her historic night right out of the gate, scoring 19 points in the first quarter. Mabrey went into the half with 27 points.

The Tempo signed Mabrey to a two-year, $2.4 million deal this offseason after originally selecting her in the expansion draft. She’s their second-leading scorer behind guard Brittney Sykes, averaging a career-high 19.4 points per game.

Mabrey has been tasked with carrying an added offensive load as Sykes remains out with a plantar fascia injury she sustained on June 16 against the Indiana Fever.

Mabrey’s previous career high was 37 points, which she scored on June 19 against the Connecticut Sun. She went 9-for-12 from 3-point range in that game, meaning she’s locked up the WNBA’s single-game 3-point record twice.
