Stranger Things' New Spinoff Title, Other Worlds, Explained & How It Reveals The Plot

· · 6 min read

In the streaming age, it’s not enough to just keep a hit show on the air for as long as the audience keeps coming back. Now, you have to expand it into a shared cinematic universe with all kinds of spinoffs and expanded media. It’s not enough for The Boys to be one of the most popular shows on television for the better part of a decade; it has to get spun off into an animated anthology called Diabolical, then A Different World-style college-set Y.A. spinoff called Gen V. Even after the flagship show has ended, we’ve got a prequel coming called Vought Rising.

Yellowstone has become an extended universe; Reacher has become an extended universe; even The Mandalorian has become its own extended universe within the further extended universe of Star Wars. So, naturally, Netflix has made Stranger Things into a larger universe. On The Town podcast, Matt Belloni is always saying that Netflix’s biggest problem is its lack of franchises. It has KPop Demon Hunters, but that’s just one movie. It has Wednesday, but that’s just 16 episodes of one show.

A decade ago, Stranger Things put Netflix on the map. It was Netflix’s first bona fide global pop-cultural hit. The ‘Flix would go on to have plenty more worldwide hits with Wednesday and Baby Reindeer and Adolescence, but Stranger Things remains the cornerstone of their brand. During the sad, slow demise of the monoculture, Stranger Things managed to capture the conversation for a brief moment in the spooky season of 2016.

Earlier this year, Stranger Things finally ended its five-season run with a feature-length series finale. The show ended definitively with the defeat of Vecna, the closing of the Upside Down, and the ultimate sacrifice of our beloved Eleven. Mike Wheeler and his friends passed on the D&D board in their basement to the next generation, and that seemed to be that.

But just because Stranger Things is over, it doesn’t mean that Stranger Things is necessarily over. Even Eleven’s sacrifice was left with enough wiggle room and ambiguity for her to return at some point. Stranger Things is quickly becoming one of America’s most oversaturated media franchises. Netflix has released an animated spinoff series, Tales from ’85, and a stage play, The First Shadow, and Stranger Things has also been spun off into books, comics, a pop-up shop, and its own tie-in D&D roleplaying starter set game.

Now, Netflix and the Duffer brothers have announced yet another spinoff series. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is set for release in 2028. Co-created by the Duffers and Kate Trefry, who will also serve as the showrunner, Other Worlds will take place in the 1950s in the fictional town of Marion, Nevada — but the title Other Worlds suggests that it won’t stay there.

Other Worlds Suggests A Major Focus On Interdimensional Studies

In 2025, Finn Wolfhard first teased a Stranger Things prequel (via Variety) that would explore different Upside Down labs across the world. The flagship series had introduced a lab in Hawkins and a lab in Soviet Russia, so there could be labs all over the globe. Now that we’ve got some clearer details about Other Worlds, it will presumably use the lab in this fictional Nevada town of Marion as a jumping-off point.

But the new series is called Other Worlds, not Other World, so it’s highly unlikely that we’ll stay in Marion for the entire series. In fact, it’s unlikely that the Upside Down will be the only other dimension that the show visits. The title of Other Worlds seems to suggest that the spinoff will focus heavily on interdimensional studies, and expanding the worldbuilding.

How Other Worlds Links To Stranger Things Season 5 & Vecna

Other Worlds will serve as a prequel to the stage play, The First Shadow, but it’ll surely have some links to the actual TV show, too. Expecting every Stranger Things fan to have seen the stage show would be even more naive than Lucasfilm assuming every Star Wars fan watched The Book of Boba Fett (a.k.a. The Mandalorian season 2.5) in between The Mandalorian seasons 2 and 3.

Much in the same way that Vought Rising will follow up on story threads from The Boys‘ final season, Other Worlds has the chance to expand on plot points from Stranger Things‘ final season. The ’50s setting could be a hint that this will be the story of the scientist that Henry killed, but that could be a stretch.

Other Worlds Can Answer Lingering Upside Down & Shadow Mysteries

For the most part, Stranger Things provided a satisfying emotional conclusion to all the main characters’ arcs. Hopper and Joyce got the happy ending they deserved, Mike got a tearful goodbye with Eleven before she made her final sacrifice, and Hawkins was freed from monster mayhem. But there are still a lot of unanswered mysteries about the Upside Down and the horrors that inhabit it.

The kids defeated Vecna in an ugly, weightless, washed-out, CGI-laden, Marvel-style final battle, but there’s still a lot we don’t understand about the Upside Down. Other Worlds is an opportunity to see the Upside Down through the eyes of scientists who actually understand it, not a bunch of kids figuring it out as they go along.

Will Stranger Things’ New Spinoff Switch Settings?

Wolfhard’s comments from 2025 suggested that the new Stranger Things show would be an anthology exploring different corners of the universe. But the subtitle A Stranger Things Adventure seems to suggest that this will be a single, linear, cohesive, serialized narrative within that universe. But the pluralization of the title Other Worlds seems like a hint that this new show will switch settings early on. Stranger Things mostly stayed in Hawkins, so surely Other Worlds won’t just do the same thing all over again — especially with that name.

It’s starting off in Nevada, but the moniker Other Worlds would suggest that the series will quickly leave Marion behind and mostly take place in another dimension. Maybe the inciting incident is that a resident of Marion gets trapped in an alternate dimension. This would at least prevent Stranger Things‘ latest spinoff from feeling like déjà vu, and save it from being yet another nostalgic small-town conspiracy thriller.
