Stephen A. Smith can’t believe who Dan Orlovsky just compared Brock Purdy to

The opening three weeks of the 2026 NFL season have already seen the spot as the league’s best quarterback being fiercely debated by analysts across the nation.

Josh Allen has got off to a staggeringly good start with the Buffalo Bills, who head into Week Four aiming to go to 4-0 against the New England Patriots. Patrick Mahomes has also returned looking like the best version of himself following his injury issue last year.

And then there is Brock Purdy, who is leading the San Francisco 49ers to top spot in the NFC West following their perfect start to the season.

Stephen A. Smith does not hide his opinions and he was quick to hit back at Dan Orlovsky when he suggested Purdy is currently the best quarterback in the league.

Stephen A. Smith pushes back on Dan Orlovsky’s Brock Purdy praise

No quarterback in the league has thrown more touchdowns (9) than Purdy this season, with his single interception making his performances even more impressive. Which has Orlovsky claiming Purdy to be the best QB currently in the league.

“I’m not discrediting Kittle and McCaffrey, but I don’t think there’s anyone in the league who could do what Purdy has done in San Francisco. I’m telling you guys, the way that this thing is getting operated right now is like watching Brady in New England,” said Orlovsky.

“I wouldn’t go that far, Dan. I wouldn’t go that far.”

That is a serious statement for Orlovsky to make given Purdy has not won a Super Bowl in any of his opening four seasons in the NFL. Of course, this season could present him with that opportunity, but the Niners’ biggest challenge arguably lies ahead of them in the Seattle Seahawks.

Fortunately, fans only have until next week to wait until the first meeting between the Niners and the reigning Super Bowl champions. This will provide perhaps the best opportunity to assess where Purdy’s game is really at against one of the best defensive units in the league.
