Steelers new uniforms: Pittsburgh mixes, matches for NFL game in France

· · 2 min read

The Pittsburgh Steelers are debuting a new twist on one of their classic uniforms.

It isn’t strictly a new design that they’re turning to for their NFL Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Rather, first-year coach Mike McCarthy’s team is patching together features of existing uniform combos to create something new for what will be the first NFL regular-season game in France at Stade de France outside Paris.

What’s new about the Steelers‘ uniforms?

Typically, the Steelers wear yellow pants for their road games. Against the Saints, however, they’ll be wearing their black Color Rush pants along with their traditional white road jerseys.

The Steelers have deployed black pants in alternate uniform combinations of the past. Typically, however, they’ve worn them at home with black Color Rush jerseys. Their most recent appearance was Dec. 15 of last season, when they defeated the Miami Dolphins at Acrisure Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”

This kit makes more conspicuous use of contrast to create a new look for a road contest. So far, it seems to have been well received.

“Now seeing it together, it’s unique for us to wear,” tight end Darnell Washington told the team website. “It’s a little bit different, but I like it.

“We are playing in a different environment, so it’s cool to mix and match. It’s a look good, feel good, play good feeling.

“Me personally, I don’t think much about what I am wearing. I just wear the same thing and go out and play.”

The Steelers traveled to France late in the week. The Saints, meanwhile, have been on the ground since early Monday. They flew across the Atlantic Ocean following their NFL Week 6 against the New York Giants.

It’s the second international game for Pittsburgh in as many years. Last season, they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the first NFL game in Ireland.

They wore their traditional home uniform for that one. This time, however, it appears the uniform managers wanted to try something different.

“It’s cool, and we’re going to have to see it on game day,” linebacker Nick Herbig told the team’s website. “But I’m a fan. I think it looks good.

“It’s a little change-up, something different. Like they say, when in Rome, but we’re going to be in Paris, so let’s do it.”
