Stargate Universe: Destiny Officially Announced

· · 3 min read

When Stargate Universe premiered in 2009, it wasn’t exactly the Stargate spin-off longtime fans had been expecting. After years of watching SG-1 and Atlantis balance interplanetary adventures with humor and camaraderie, audiences were suddenly thrown into a much bleaker story about a group of strangers stranded aboard an ancient ship, with little hope of getting home.

The show’s darker tone and serialized storytelling were already huge departures from the beloved Stargate formula, but its cast of characters proved just as contentious. Characters like Dr. Nicholas Rush could be manipulative, selfish, and downright difficult to root for, while even the supposed heroes regularly made decisions that frustrated viewers and often didn’t make any sense.

The timing didn’t help, either, as Atlantis had recently ended, and many fans saw Universe as a lackluster replacement. Although the second season eventually won over some skeptics, Syfy canceled Stargate Universe after just two seasons, leaving its central story unresolved in 2011. Now, 15 years later, the franchise’s most divisive spin-off is making an unexpected return.

Although SGU never received the third season needed to finish its story, the show is officially making a comeback of sorts. BlueBrixx has announced a brand-new replica of the Destiny, the enormous Ancient spacecraft that served as the primary setting throughout the series. It’s also one of several officially licensed Stargate releases coming from the company, which has already announced an extensive collection of models based on SG-1 and Atlantis.

The new Destiny model features 859 pieces and measures approximately 45.3 cm long, 30.4 cm wide, and 11.4 cm tall when completed. Priced at €59.95 (or roughly $70 USD), the set faithfully recreates the vessel’s unusual elongated silhouette and distinctive Ancient architecture. It’s part of the BlueBrixx-Pro collection and is recommended for builders ages 14 and older.

This BlueBrixx model recreates the enormous Ancient exploration vessel that serves as the central setting of Stargate Universe. Destiny was launched on an automated mission long before the events of the series and continues to follow its programmed course through distant galaxies. After a group of humans reaches the vessel using the mysterious ninth-chevron address, the ancient technology becomes their involuntary home far beyond familiar space.

For longtime fans, the Destiny is arguably more important to Stargate Universe and the larger franchise as its actual characters. The ship’s deteriorating systems, mysterious origins, and endless journey through distant galaxies provided the foundation for much of the show’s storytelling. Its unexplored corridors and Ancient technology also helped establish the darker atmosphere that distinguished the spin-off from its predecessors.

Interestingly, BlueBrixx is also releasing a companion Seed Ship model featuring 215 pieces for €19.95. These unmanned Ancient vessels traveled ahead of the Destiny, establishing Stargate networks on distant planets and helping prepare the way for its mission.

Unfortunately, neither model has a confirmed release date yet, with both currently listed as “Coming Soon” on the official BlueBrixx website. Fans can sign up for email notifications when the sets become available, although pre-orders have not officially opened. For a series that ended on a cliffhanger and will likely never get a proper conclusion, the new releases offer an opportunity to revisit one of Stargate‘s most ambitious, albeit flawed, stories.
