'Stargate' Officially Hits Free Streaming Ahead of Prime Video's Resurrected Reboot
Hannah covers horror, sci-fi, and games at Collider, where she writes news and features, reviews new releases, and interviews the people who make them. She’s helping build out Collider‘s gaming coverage, with Pokémon as one of her specialties. If she isn’t writing about a monster, she’s probably watching one on a tape from her VHS collection.
Before Richard Dean Anderson made Jack O’Neill a television favorite, Kurt Russell took the first trip through the Stargate. His military commander is considerably less pleased about the assignment than James Spader‘s Daniel Jackson, an Egyptologist whose theories suddenly become much harder to dismiss. Their 1994 adventure helped launch a franchise that would find room for years of interplanetary exploration.
The original movie is still worth revisiting on its own, though. Russell and Spader make an appealingly mismatched pair, with Daniel’s curiosity frequently at odds with the priorities of the armed men accompanying him. For anyone whose affection for Stargate began with its television shows, it is a chance to return to the expedition that started everything.
Stargate is joining Pluto TV’s free streaming lineup this November, according to the service’s announced monthly schedule. The addition gives viewers another opportunity to watch Russell’s sci-fi adventure through the ad-supported platform without a paid subscription. A separate arrival date was not specified in the lineup.
- The Wachowskis’ 1999 film won four Academy Awards, including Visual Effects and Film
Editing. - Bullet time was shot with a rig of roughly 120 still cameras firing in sequence around the
actors. - Keanu Reeves trained in martial arts for about four months before a frame was shot,
recovering from neck surgery the whole time. - It opened the same year as Fight Club and eXistenZ, in a run of films about not trusting the
world in front of you.
- Mad Max: Fury Road won six Academy Awards in 2016, more than any other film that year.
- George Miller storyboarded the entire film as roughly 3,500 panels before there was a
script. - The chase was shot almost entirely practical in the Namib Desert, with real vehicles and
real stunt performers. - Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth carried the prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, in 2024.
- Blade Runner 2049 won Roger Deakins his first Oscar for cinematography, on his fourteenth
nomination. - The film also took Best Visual Effects, 35 years after Ridley Scott’s 1982 original.
- Villeneuve shot it on large-format film and kept the fog and rain practical on set wherever
he could. - Three short films by Luke Scott and Shinichiro Watanabe bridge the 30-year gap between the
two movies.
- Denis Villeneuve’s Dune won six Academy Awards in 2022, including Cinematography and
Original Score. - Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan’s Tenet so he could score Dune instead.
- Dune: Part Two arrived in 2024 and brought in Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher
Walken. - David Lynch’s 1984 version and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unmade one are both their
own legends by now.
- The 1977 original won six Academy Awards plus a special achievement award for sound effects.
- John Williams’ score was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and became the
best-selling symphonic film soundtrack ever. - Andor took the galaxy somewhere colder and earned Emmy nominations for drama series in both
seasons. - The saga now runs across eleven feature films and a growing shelf of series on Disney+.
Kurt Russell and James Spader Make ‘Stargate’ Worth Revisiting

Directed by Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dean Devlin, the movie follows an expedition through an ancient device discovered in Egypt. Daniel’s work helps unlock its purpose as a gateway to another world, where the team encounters a civilization ruled by Ra (Jaye Davidson). Emmerich’s approach to science fiction gives the discovery the scale of a blockbuster, with enormous structures and a mystery that quickly becomes dangerous.
Daniel is an easy character to root for because discovering this world means so much to him. Spader makes his excitement infectious, even when his eagerness puts him at odds with the expedition. Russell’s Colonel Jack O’Neil has reasons of his own for taking the mission, bringing a darker undercurrent to what might otherwise be a straightforward action role. Their different responses to the discovery give the movie much of its appeal. Daniel wants to understand the people they meet, while the military team needs to assess the threat and find a way home. The eventual television franchise would get considerably more time to develop those competing interests, but the original movie establishes an effective partnership between exploration and action.
That premise proved durable enough to support Stargate SG-1 and its successors, with Anderson and Michael Shanks taking over the central roles on television. Viewers familiar with SG-1’s much larger universe can enjoy seeing how it all began with one expedition and a spectacularly consequential discovery.
