Today should be a moment Knicks fans have anticipated for about a third of a lifetime. It has been 27 years since Madison Square Garden hosted an NBA Finals game. Its not pass/fail either. An NBA Finals game is one thing. An NBA Finals Game 3 at home when already up 2-0 is a little different.
The truth of the matter is the Knicks have a much better than a punchers chance to win the whole thing. While NY has known names like Earl Monroe, Bob McAdoo, Bernard King, Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony, but those were not championship level ‘teams’. The 2025-26 New York Knicks are a well-conditioned ‘team’ that has everything needed to win, while at the same time, they are not completely reliant on any one player. Not even Jalen Brunson.
From a statistics standpoint, the Spurs are in trouble. Through two games, the Knicks have won each shooting stat combined. The Spurs only have a slight rebounding edge (+3). The Knicks lead in assists, steals, lower turnovers, total points scored and points scored per game.
Victor Wembanyama is critically important to the Spurs’ potential success. As was evident in Game 2, the Spurs cannot afford for Wemby to have a late start. He also must be a defensive presence. The Knicks have consistently gotten 17-20 per game from four different players on average throughout these playoffs. The Spurs are getting 2-4 depending on game and matchup. Where this shifts, is in the hustle stats and small things that don’t always show up in the box score.
OG Anunoby’s length, Josh Hart’s defense, Karl Anthony Towns’ consistent production in the paint, the timely shooting of Landry Shamet as well as contributions from Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson (when healthy) are all contributing to wins in ways the Spurs have not shown yet.
Whether the President shows up or not, Madison Square Garden should be loud and raucous. Most of those fans have waited their whole adult life for this. The environment should favor the Knicks by a wide margin. However, the Spurs cannot afford to go down 3-0 with an elimination game later in the week. Tonight, should be as close to a must win scenario as possible without literally being a must win scenario.
