The Spurs could be without their prize offseason acquisition when they open defense of their Western Conference championship.

Veteran forward Tobias Harris is questionable for the regular season opener against Oklahoma City on Oct. 20 due to a left calf strain he sustained last week in training camp, the Spurs announced Sunday before their annual Silver & Black Scrimmage at the Frost Bank Center.

Harris, who sat out the scrimmage, will be reevaluated after the five-game preseason, which begins Thursday with a home game against Atlanta and ends Oct. 16 at the Frost.

The Spurs signed the versatile 6-foot-8, 230-pound Harris to a two-year, $31 million contract to bolster their frontcourt. He can play either forward spot, post up smaller defenders, defend multiple positions and rebound.

A career 15.6 point-per-game scorer, Harris averaged 13.3 last season, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists as the third-scoring option on a Detroit Pistons squad that won 60 games and entered the playoffs as the East’s top seed.

“He’s been in this league for a long time,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. “He’s averaged 20 points on teams. He’s been in different types of roles. So I think being able to add somebody like him is big for us.”
