Spain not thinking about semis against France ahead of Belgium clash

· · 1 min read

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente stressed that he’s not thinking about a potential World Cup semi-finals against France while they still have a quarter-finals clash against Belgium on Friday.

“We’re not thinking about anything other than Belgium. If we win, then we will speak about France. But as professionals, I can guarantee that we’re completely focused on tomorrow’s game,” he said in a news conference on Thursday.

France booked a spot in the semi-finals after a 2-0 win over Morocco, a match which De la Fuente watched.

“France were the better team. We know what they’re capable of,” he said.

De la Fuente stressed that he has huge respect for Belgium, who beat co-hosts United States 4-1 in the last 16.

“Belgium are a very strong team with players who are used to win. This will be a challenge,” he said.

Spain are the only nation left in the tournament that still haven’t conceded a goal, but they’re also not among the most prolific scorers, which, according to the coach, is due solely to minor details.

“I’m aware of what I can control, and I control that well. Whatever else happens is beyond our control. That gives me a lot of peace of mind,” he said. “It’s one thing to be nervous, it’s another to be afraid.”
