Southern takes control late to hand Prairie View A&M second straight loss in SWAC play

PRAIRIE VIEW – Southern broke open a tight game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Prairie View A&M 28-14 on Saturday at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field.

The Panthers (2-5, 2-2 SWAC) have dropped their first two games in conference play. Last week, they couldn’t hold leads of 24 and 17 points in a one-point loss at Mississippi Valley State.

Southern (3-4, 1-2) took the lead on Trey Holly’s 30-yard touchdown run with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Herman Brister III then iced the win with a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown with 15 seconds remaining.

Prairie View’s TDs came on a 5-yard run by Chase Bingmon and Tevin Carter’s 48-yard TD pass to Damien McDaniel.

Next up for Prairie View is a home game against Alcorn State at 2 p.m. Saturday.
