Sources: Man United have internally discussed signing 6ft 4in Bundesliga attacker
Manchester United are considering Freiburg forward Igor Matanović as Michael Carrick looks to ensure his attack has enough depth for the new season.
United already have Benjamin Sesko as their main centre-forward, but Joshua Zirkzee’s uncertain future could create space for another striker.
Juventus have been pursuing the Dutchman, and if he returns to Serie A, United would need someone capable of providing genuine competition rather than leaving too much responsibility on Sesko.
Matanović has now emerged as an intriguing option after an impressive campaign in Germany.
Man United have discussed Matanović move
Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Man United have discussed a potential move for Matanović internally.
The 23-year-old Croatian scored 15 goals for Freiburg last season and offers a physical profile similar to Sesko.
Tottenham are also monitoring him, which could create competition if United decide to progress beyond preliminary discussions.
Matanović’s emergence is closely connected to Zirkzee’s situation. The Sun previously reported that Juventus had advanced talks over a loan containing a £30million option to buy, with United willing to discuss his departure.
However, Zirkzee has continued to feature in pre-season. He scored in United’s 1-1 friendly draw with Leeds, showing Carrick that he can still contribute.

United shoud move if Zirkzee actually leaves
Matanović is an interesting target, but United do not need to rush.
Signing another young striker while Sesko and Zirkzee remain at the club could create unnecessary competition without solving a clear weakness.
The picture changes completely if Juventus complete a deal for Zirkzee.
At 6ft 4in, Matanović would give Carrick another powerful focal point, but he is more than simply a target man.
His mobility and finishing in Germany suggest there is considerable development potential.
Tottenham’s interest may create pressure, but United should avoid allowing a rival club to dictate their timetable.
The smartest approach is straightforward: keep discussions alive while Zirkzee’s future is resolved.
If he leaves, Matanović becomes a logical replacement who can challenge Sesko without demanding an automatic starting position.
