Soldiers take over restive Cross River community

Soldiers from the Nigerian Army, 13 Brigade Calabar have now taken over Boje and Isobendighe communities of Boki LGA of Cross River State following devastating communal clashes which resurfaced about two weeks ago.

The communal conflict has reportedly affected lives, properties and farmlands.

Chairman of the LGA, Eti-Eka Beatrice Nyiam, said following the resurgence of the conflict, both soldiers and policemen were deployed to the two communities.

The information officer, Major Yemi Sokoya made the confirmation to our correspondent on Sunday on phone but did not disclose the extent of casualties.

Sokoya said the soldiers will not be there for too long, however, their stay will depend on the situation.

“The soldiers won’t be there forever. Once the situation is resolved and calm returns the soldiers will be ordered to leave.”

Earlier, the state police command had in a statement signed by the PPRO, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata said they have heightened security efforts to calm the renewed tension, adding that they were engaging relevant stakeholders to de-escalate the situation and foster peace.

“The area is currently relatively calm, while security personnel continue to monitor developments closely.

“The Command urges residents of both communities to remain calm, exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of further escalating the situation.”
