Shreyas Iyer named India’s new T20I captain

Shreyas Iyer has been confirmed as India’s new T20I captain. ahead of the upcoming tour of Ireland and England in June and July. 

Tilak Varma steps up as Iyer’s deputy, replacing Axar Patel as vice-captain.

The squad also includes 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who receives his first senior India call-up on the back of a landmark IPL season with Rajasthan Royals.

Iyer’s path to the national captaincy has been shaped almost entirely by his leadership record in the IPL.

He first took charge of the Delhi Capitals in 2018. He inherited a team that was struggling and gradually rebuilt it into a formidable unit that reached the finals in 2020. 

He then took over at Kolkata Knight Riders and led them to a dominant title-winning run to lift the IPL trophy in 2024. Punjab Kings then signed him for ₹26.75 crore ahead of the 2025 season.

He repaid the trust and delivered their first final appearance in years while personally scoring 604 runs. Although Punjab did not reach the playoffs in 2026, Iyer is expected to go again for glory in the next edition.

What is Shreyas Iyer’s record in IPL as captain?

Iyer has led in 101 matches in IPL with three different franchises: Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. 

He has won 55, lost 41, tied two, and there were no results in three.
