Sheriff Country Falls Down The Same Pitfall That Has Fire Country’s Bode Trapped

· · 4 min read

Warning! SPOILERS ahead about Sheriff Country season 2, episode 4.The resolution of one big story in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 4 hides a danger for the Fire Country spinoff that plagued its parent series for some time. Debuting during Fire Country season 4’s reset after losing two original characters, Sheriff Country season 1 immediately established itself as the best possible expansion of Edgewater’s world, with its police procedural aspects and Fox family drama proving how much of a valid heir Sheriff Country was to Fire Country. This was reflected in Sheriff Country season 1’s ratings surpassing Fire Country season 4‘s, something extremely difficult for a spinoff to achieve.

Sheriff Country season 1 ending with the surprise reveal of both Alec Kane’s betrayal of the DEA and Mickey alike and Mickey’s mother being alive set the scene for an explosive season 2, especially given that Mickey also had to arrest Wes for the illegal growing and the heist. Everything that upended Mickey’s personal life nevertheless proved inextricably linked to her professional one, as DEA Deputy Director Eva Santos’ reason for her presence in Edgewater was to catch the Stoyanovs, despite her being Mickey’s mother.

Sheriff Country season 2 set up the Stoyanovs as the most difficult challenge that Edgewater’s Sheriff’s Office had to face. However, Sheriff Country season 2, episode 4 quickly resolved the threat completely, as Wes and the trafficked girls were found, and all the Stoyanovs arrested. Such a speedy resolution thus highlights a discrepancy between the expectation set up by the threat and how the story unfurled.

Sheriff Country Season 2, Episode 4 Solved The Stoyanovs’ Case

What causes the quick resolution to be at odds with its set-up is how the Stoyanovs had already been introduced as important players of Edgewater’s seedy underbelly in Sheriff Country season 1. Even if they weren’t the mastermind behind the threats to Deadwater’s residents, members of the Bulgarian cartel still enforced Miranda Fraley’s orders via Alec. Their introduction happening early in Sheriff Country season 1 meant that such a storyline was set up to unfold at a relatively slow pace.

However, that changed completely once the family behind the Bulgarian cartel was revealed to be the Stoyanovs in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 1. In just three episodes, Sheriff Country season 2 went from setting up an investigation where Wes would be secretly gathering intel, only for him to be captured, to the DEA and Sheriff’s Office discovering the Stoyanovs’ lab, to finally end in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 4 with Wes safe and the Stoyanovs about to pay for their crimes.

The monumental divergence between the pace of the story when the Bulgarian cartel was introduced and its rapid conclusion proves Lieutenant Boone and Sheriff Fox wrong in their analysis that the Stoyanovs posed a threat so big that it would be difficult to stop them. It also conveniently wrapped up the supposedly biggest case that Edgewater had ever seen just before the upcoming prison break at the heart of the Fire Country/Sheriff Country crossover event, accentuating the possibility that Sheriff Country may repeat the same mistakes of Fire Country.

How Sheriff Country Can Avoid Inheriting Fire Country’s Biggest Problem

Fire Country‘s massive threats not being believable because they are neutralized in so little time has been the firefighting drama’s biggest problem for a while, emphasized by its recurring presence in the story. That Sheriff Country season 2 has done something similar with the Stoyanovs is a missed opportunity, especially considering how well that threat was originally set up.

Given what storylines Sheriff Country season 2, episode 4 introduced and concluded, though, this pace issue may very well be delimited. Indeed, while the imminent threat convinced Mickey to accept the help of a tech company to find Wes and the girls without further debate, their services including predictive policing will undoubtedly make that a bigger story, particularly as Mickey’s decision to use the company’s services wasn’t taken after careful research, but at the insistence of Boone’s suggestions.

The Stoyanov case’s end bringing forth Eva Santos’ admission that she returned to Edgewater to meet Mickey also highlighted how the investigation was really a pretext, with the family drama aspect being the most important in that storyline. Given how that led to Mickey’s realization that she bore no ill will toward Eva but that she also didn’t want to keep in touch, as her mother was Maria and she died with Eva’s departure from Edgewater decades before, it’s clear that the case itself served the bigger story of the Fox family drama, making Sheriff Country season 2’s lapse forgivable.
