Sheehan hires former player Caitlyn Velez as its new girls basketball coach
Caitlyn Velez is coming home to take over the Sheehan girls basketball team.
The 2021 Sheehan graduate has landed her first head coaching position, replacing her high school basketball coach.
“This means a lot to me to get my first head coaching job at my alma mater,” Velez said. “I am excited to be able to give back to a place that gave so much to me and to develop young girls to be confident and instill the many life skills that basketball teaches.”

As a senior at Sheehan, Velez was named as a GametimeCT All-State Honorable Mention selection.
After graduating from Sheehan, Velez played guard for Division III Randolph-Macon in Virginia, where she graduated in 2025.
Velez takes over for longtime Sheehan coach Mike Busillo, who retired at the end of last season.
Velez said she has spoken to Busillo and knows he will always be a phone call away.
“(Busillo) and I are good friends and it is comforting he’s there. It’s nice to have some one to lean on and it’s not just him but other coaches I have had in Wallingford. It’s nice to have so many people supporting me,” Velez said. “The biggest thing I learned from (Busillo) is that this is about more than basketball and wins and losses. It’s about getting good grades, being a good member of the community and the girls you play with becoming life-long relationships.”
Busillo took over the Sheehan girls basketball program in 2006 and guided the Titans to three CIAC finals, including their first state championship since 1976 two seasons ago in Class MM.
His final game was a loss to Notre Dame Prep in the second round of the Division II tournament last season.
Sheehan started five seniors in that game, including all-state guard Megan Wresien, her sister Jenna and Busillo’s daughter, Gabby Busillo.
