Senate extends 2025 budget capital implementation to December

The Senate has approved another extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

The decision was reached on Tuesday after senators considered and passed the amendment bill clause by clause, thereby allowing the capital component of the 2025 budget to remain in force until the end of the year.

The bill was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, and seeks to amend the 2025 Appropriation Act to further extend the implementation period of its capital component.

Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, Bamidele said the extension was necessary and practical, noting that the execution of capital projects contained in the 2025 Appropriation Act had yet to reach the desired level despite the release of approximately the allocated funds to ministries, departments and agencies of government.

Presenting the bill, the Senate Leader said it was titled, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 from 30th September, 2026 to 31st December, 2026 and for other Related Matters, 2026 (SB. 1067).”

He also presented the measure as, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 from 30th September, 2026 to 31st December, 2026 (SB. 1067).”
