Security tightened around Niger Presidential Palace amid reported military unrest

· · 1 min read

Security has been stepped up around Niger’s Presidential Palace in Niamey following reports of unrest involving some members of the country’s armed forces, according to security sources.

The sources, quoted by security reporter Zagazola Makama on X, said the Presidential Guard, backed by armoured vehicles, increased its presence around the palace on the night of 3 July and into 4 July after what they described as a limited protest by personnel from an armoured unit of the Niger Armed Forces (FAN).

According to the sources, some soldiers reportedly refused to deploy to frontline positions in the northern Tillabéri Region, particularly around Inatès and Chinagodrar. They allegedly raised concerns about a lack of heavy equipment and inadequate operational resources to address the growing security threats in the area.

One security source described the incident as a “small mutiny”, although the Nigerien authorities have not officially confirmed the claim.

The reported protest is said to have prompted the government to strengthen security around the Presidential Palace and temporarily restrict movement in nearby areas as a precaution.

The Tillabéri Region is one of Niger’s most dangerous areas, where armed extremist groups, including factions linked to the so-called Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), have carried out repeated attacks.

At the time of writing, neither the Nigerien government nor the military had issued an official statement on the reported protest or the increased security around the Presidency.
