Sean Shelby's Shoes: What's next for Justin Gaethje after UFC White House win?

Justin Gaethje produced an all-time octagon moment at UFC Freedom 250 when he handed Ilia Topuria his first MMA loss.

After the overwhelming majority predicted the event from the White House with an American knocked out cold on the South Lawn, Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) flipped the script and went to war with Topuria (17-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) where he thrives. He lived up to his promise to change Topuria’s face, and the heavy damage ultimately led to the now former champion’s corner calling the fight before Round 5.

It was an iconic performance for Gaethje, who finally completes his journey to undisputed gold in the most special way possible. It’s an almost impossible moment to top, and that’s why the questions about retirement almost instantly surfaced after his hand was raised.

Gaethje, 37, stated multiple times that he promised his mother he would not make a decision on his future on the night of the fight, and it will be interesting to see how he comes to make the choice.

On one hand, it’s indeed the pinnacle of accomplishment. On the other, though, with undisputed status, Gaethje would seemingly not be entitled to his biggest paydays, and a title defense against Arman Tsarukyan next would be a worthy piece of business for everyone involved.

Tsarukyan should be the guy fighting for that belt. There’s some whispers about Topuria getting a rematch, but after the amount of punishment he took, should be nowhere near any octagon anytime soon.

After everything Gaethje has done in the sport, his choice – whatever it may be – should be accepted by all. Selfishly, though, I want to see more of him, because no one the history of the sport has provided the type of entertainment “The Highlight” offers each time in that cage.
