Sean McVay really doesn't want to talk about Rams' Australia plans

· · 2 min read

In just a few weeks, the Los Angeles Rams will take on the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, the NFL’s first-ever game in Australia. Kyle Shanahan wasn’t afraid to disclose that his team will arrive a week before kickoff, but Sean McVay isn’t giving anything away about the Rams’ travel plans.

After ESPN reported this week that the Rams will fly into Melbourne only one day before the game, McVay was asked whether the team has finalized its plans for the trip. He declined to answer, and then proceeded to get into a back-and-forth exchange with the reporter about it.

Below is the full exchange from Thursday’s press conference.

Reporter: “Have you finalized plans for when you guys are going to leave for Australia? How you’re going to handle that trip?”

McVay: “Yeah, but I’d rather just keep it in-house.”

Reporter: “Why?”

McVay: “What’s the reason to talk about it, you know? Honestly, I would respectfully just say we have, but I’d prefer not to talk about it.”

Reporter: “Is it a strategic thing?”

McVay: “I just don’t want to talk about it. What does it matter?”

Reporter: “Well, fans, I think, are curious.”

McVay: “We won’t be there long enough for the fans to really have any curiosity about it.”

Reporter: “You guys have taken different ways of doing it compared to a lot of NFL teams. Last year, you went to London, very short turnaround, played very well against the Jaguars. This is a longer trip, and are you going to do something similar or are you going to give yourself more runway?”

McVay: “Yeah, I’d rather not talk about it.”

You can watch McVay’s back-and-forth in the video below.

When ESPN’s report came out, many fans questioned whether it was the right move for the Rams to give themselves so little time to adjust to the massive time difference between L.A. and Melbourne. The team is very intentional about its travel, reportedly even sending members of the organization to and from Australia to experiment with the timing of jet lag.

They apparently determined that spending the least amount of time there is the best approach for players, which should make recovering from that game much easier because their body clocks will almost still be on West Coast time.

It’s not going to be an easy trip, but the Rams are doing what they feel will help them not only beat the 49ers, but stay fresh for Week 2 against the Giants.
