Sean McVay explains what stands out about ex-QB-turned-OC Sean Mannion

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has coached plenty of quarterbacks. Now, he’ll watch as his defense will play against one coaching from the sideline.

Sean Mannion, who played six years in the NFL, including two under McVay with the Rams from 2017 to 2018, will now coach the Philadelphia Eagles as a first-year offensive coordinator. McVay told reporters Wednesday that he remembers Mannion as “really smart, conscientious, was always eager to learn, asked great questions, had a great humility, but a great curiosity.”

Mannion only started one game in the eight he played in for McVay over those two seasons with the Rams. He completed 24-of-40 passes for 208 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions — mostly in one Week 17 loss in 2017, his only start with the Rams under McVay.

He left the Rams after the 2018 season, when Mannion went on to play for the Vikings before eventually joining the Green Bay Packers coaching staff in 2024 under another McVay acolyte: Matt LaFleur. The Packers head coach was Mannion’s offensive coordinator for the 2017 season in Los Angeles. McVay said he heard how well Mannion worked for LaFleur, who is one of his closest friends.

“It’s cool to be able to see him in a great opportunity, a big-time job being the OC for Philly,” McVay said.

The reunion comes with some history, unrelated to Mannion. The Rams lost last season’s Week 3 game in Philadelphia on a blocked field goal as time ran out, and are 0-4 against Philadelphia since 2023.

Now, McVay and company will look to snag their first win against the Eagles. They’ll have to do so against an offense that McVay knows well.
