Schick calls time on Czechia career after World Cup exit

Patrik Schick has announced his retirement from international football, following Czechia’s 2026 World Cup exit.

Miroslav Koubek’s side crashed out of the tournament following their 3-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico, which saw them finish bottom of Group A with just one point from three matches.

Schick was the joint-top scorer at Euro 2020 with five goals – level with Cristiano Ronaldo – including a stunning attempt from the halfway line against Scotland, as Czechia reached the quarter-finals.

However, the Bayer Leverkusen forward was unable to repeat those exploits in North America, registering just a single shot on target in three appearances, the last of which came as a substitute against Mexico.

“He leaves behind unforgettable goals and moments that Czech fans will remember for a long time to come,” a statement read on Czechia’s official X account.

“Thank you for every match, every goal, and the pride with which you represented the Czech Republic.”

Schick brings the curtain down on his international career having scored 26 goals in 56 caps since making his debut against Malta in May 2016.

That puts the 32-year-old in fourth place on Czechia’s all-time list, behind Jan Koller (55), Milan Baros (41) and Vladimir Smicer (27).
