· · 2 min read

For the first time in 53 years, the New York Knicks are NBA champions. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals on Saturday night. New York finished the regular season with a 53-29 record, earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, and stormed through the playoffs before finally capturing the franchise’s first title since 1973. The celebrations began almost immediately. Unfortunately, not all of them were positive.

After the final buzzer sounded, thousands of Knicks fans poured into the streets throughout New York City to celebrate the long-awaited championship.

For a fan base that had waited more than five decades for this moment, emotional reactions were expected. The city was filled with excitement, chanting, fireworks, and celebrations that stretched well into the night. However, as the crowds grew larger, some areas reportedly became increasingly chaotic.

Violence and Destruction Reported

According to reports from the scene, the celebrations took a troubling turn as violence and property damage began to occur throughout parts of the city. At least one shooting was reported during the festivities, creating a frightening situation amid what should have been a joyous occasion.

Law enforcement also faced numerous challenges as crowds became more difficult to control. Reports indicate that five police vehicles were damaged, while several individuals allegedly targeted mounted police units, including attacks on police horses.

Authorities made at least 63 arrests as officers worked to restore order.

Fires and Major Property Damage

The destruction didn’t stop there. Multiple fires reportedly broke out during the overnight celebrations, requiring emergency crews to respond across different locations. Reports also indicate that five buses were heavily damaged or destroyed during the unrest.

While many Knicks fans celebrated responsibly, the actions of a smaller group overshadowed what should have been a historic night for the city.

A Championship Night Marred by Chaos

The Knicks delivered a championship that generations of fans had been waiting to witness.

Sadly, what should have been remembered solely as a night of celebration also became a night marked by violence, arrests, property damage, and public safety concerns throughout New York City.
