Safety concerns mount in Jalingo over exposed electrical infrastructure

· · 2 min read

Residents around the Nukkai Market axis in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state, have expressed serious concern over what they described as a dangerous electrical hazard involving a low hanging power wire suspended at an unsafe height within a populated area where children regularly play.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to DAILY POST on Saturday morning said the situation has created panic in the community, following the discovery of a sagging electrical wire hanging dangerously close to ground level.

According to them, the wire is positioned directly above an open space frequently used by children, raising fears of possible electrocution or other fatal accidents if urgent action is not taken.

Residents further explained that children playing in the area narrowly escaped contact with the exposed wire, an incident that immediately triggered alarm among parents, traders, and passersby.

The proximity of the wire to a busy commercial and residential environment has heightened concerns, given the daily movement of people around Nukkai Market.

A trader in the area, identified as Fatimat Allen, described the situation as alarming and called for immediate intervention to prevent a potential tragedy.

“We are calling on the YEDC to act fast in order to prevent any form of accident that will cause us severe damages and loss of lives,” she pleaded.

Other community members who also spoke to DAILY POST echoed similar concerns, urging the relevant electricity distribution authority to urgently inspect the infrastructure and carry out necessary repairs before the situation escalates into a disaster.

Attention has been drawn to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, which residents believe should swiftly intervene by adjusting or securing the affected pole and wiring system.

Additional voices from the community, including Sunday Ada, Jamilu Kabiru, and engineer Sanda Kole, emphasized that while electricity infrastructure remains vital for development and daily life, safety standards must not be compromised, especially in densely populated areas where children are mostly at risk.

They stressed that the situation requires immediate technical assessment and corrective action to prevent avoidable loss of lives or injuries.
