Sabrina Ionescu did everything she could to help the New York Liberty avoid another heartbreaking loss on Sunday. The four-time WNBA All-Star poured in 28 points while adding eight assists, four rebounds and three steals, but it wasn’t enough as the Liberty fell 93-91 to the Toronto Tempo in another tightly contested game.

The defeat dropped New York to back-to-back losses after falling to the Minnesota Lynx one day earlier. It also came with an additional consequence for Ionescu after officials assessed her first technical foul of the 2026 season. That call now carries an automatic financial penalty under WNBA rules.

Sabrina Ionescu fined after first technical foul of season

Ionescu picked up the technical foul during the fourth quarter following what initially appeared to be a routine three-point play opportunity. With 7:17 remaining, the Liberty guard drove to the basket and converted a layup while Toronto forward Nyara Sabally was called for a shooting foul.

Officials then reviewed the play. Following the review, referees assessed Ionescu a technical foul after determining she made contact with Sabally’s face while coming down on the play. The television broadcast noted the contact as the reason for the unexpected decision.

It marked Ionescu’s first technical foul of the season. Under WNBA rules, a player’s first three technical fouls each result in an automatic $500 fine. Technical fouls four through seven carry $1,000 fines, while every technical beyond that costs $1,500 and triggers a one-game suspension for every other additional technical foul.

While the financial penalty is relatively minor, it’s another frustrating outcome on a day when Ionescu delivered one of her strongest all-around performances of the season.

Liberty drop second straight close game

Ionescu’s offensive explosion wasn’t enough to overcome a hot-shooting Toronto squad led by Marina Mabrey. Mabrey scored 30 points to lead the Tempo to a 93-91 victory at Bell Centre in Montreal, handing the Liberty consecutive narrow defeats after Saturday’s loss to the Lynx.

Breanna Stewart also turned in a strong performance for New York, finishing with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block, but the Liberty couldn’t come up with the defensive stops they needed late. The losses come at an important point in the season as New York looks to maintain its position near the top of the WNBA standings heading into the second half of the year.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton also faces league discipline

Ionescu wasn’t the only Liberty player penalized during Sunday’s contest. Veteran guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was assessed a technical foul and ejected after accidentally striking Mabrey with her shoe while throwing it in frustration.

Earlier in the game, Laney-Hamilton had also been called for a Flagrant 1 foul. As a result, she’ll face two separate fines from the league: a $500 fine for the technical foul and another $500 fine for the Flagrant 1, totaling $1,000 in league discipline.

For Ionescu, the technical serves as a reminder of how quickly emotions can boil over during a tightly contested game. Fortunately for the Liberty star, it’s only her first technical of the season, leaving her well below the threshold where suspensions become a concern.
