RSU bans undergraduate night driving after fatal campus accident

The university management identified the two undergraduate drivers as Darlington Onuaku of the Department of Development and Communication Studies and Obinna Ikechi of the Department of Computer Science.

The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed that both suspects have been arrested, detained, and transferred to the state criminal investigation department for immediate prosecution.

The victim’s body has since been deposited at a local mortuary.

New Curfew, Designated Gates, and Shuttle Manifests

Faced with growing anger over lax traffic laws, the university senate convened an emergency safety council meeting on Wednesday to roll out sweeping vehicular regulations designed to eliminate campus reckless driving.

Under the newly active guidelines, undergraduate students are strictly prohibited from driving personal vehicles anywhere on campus between 4:00 p.m. in the evening and 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

Tightened Border Patrols and Hostel Visual Audits

The registrar clarified that postgraduate students and those attending the Centre for Continuing Education will only be permitted to drive on campus after undergoing visual identity verification at security checkpoints.

“Any student found engaging in reckless driving or violating the evening ban will face immediate suspension, formal university disciplinary proceedings, and the permanent impoundment of the vehicle involved,” Registrar Daminabo warned.

To complement the traffic sweep and secure the campus perimeter after dusk, RSU authorities have also restricted visitor access to all student hostels, ordering that all daily hostel visits must end strictly by 6:00 p.m.

The management urged security guards to enforce the new 30 km/h speed limits aggressively to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
