Royce White, a former NBA player, sat courtside at a WNBA game while wearing a blonde wig after claiming that he wanted to be drafted in the 2027 WNBA Draft. 

On Friday, Aug. 28, White, 35, shared a photo of himself sitting courtside for the Indiana Fever’s 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse while wearing a long blonde wig. 

“The Kweeeen has arrived,” he wrote on Instagram. “They better bow for a beautiful Black Trans Lesbian! Royce White For President. WNBA #LetRoyshaPlay.”

When asked why he decided to attend the WNBA game, White told Outkick, “First of all, Black trans lesbians matter.”

“We’ve always mattered, we’ve always existed,” he continued. “We have a right to exist, and we have a right to be included and participate, and that’s what I’m here to do. I’m here to participate and scout some of the competition as well.”

The athlete’s courtside appearance comes after he and Enes Kanter Freedom were allegedly told they are not eligible for the WNBA draft, per the Associated Press. The NBA players previously declared their intention to enter next year’s draft amid debates on transgender athletes in sports.

On Aug. 23, Freedom, 34, was ejected from an Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game after a heated exchange with Sky star Natasha Cloud, during which the self-described “human rights activist” wore a shirt that read, “WOMAN noun adult human female.”

“I’m supporting women, and that is the reason they’re kicking me out,” Freedom told a group of arena officials and law enforcement officers in the Wintrust Arena lobby, according to The Athletic. “It’s unacceptable.”

After the athletes declared their desire to play in the WNBA, former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz agreed to provide legal assistance in White’s bid to join the league.

“Gaetz Law is currently providing legal counsel to Royce White,” Gaetz told Fox News earlier this month. “Royce White changed how the NBA thinks about player mental health. Now Royce White is an inspirational voice for Black transexual lesbians everywhere who aspire to play in the WNBA.”

Prior to that, White announced, “I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for the purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I’ll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well,” per Fox News.

“I think I’d be unstoppable. But I’m a team-first guy,” he added. “I’m a pass-first kind of player. I do the little things. I led my team in all five major stat categories at Iowa State University, so I do a little bit of everything. I’ll do whatever the coach needs me to do. I’ll do whatever the girls need me to do… I think it’s only fair.”

White also suggested that he would be forced to file “a discrimination lawsuit” if he goes undrafted. 

“We’re gonna have to have a huge legal battle about discrimination if I can’t play,” he said. “I mean, that’s ridiculous.”
