Roman Anthony is one of the faces of the Boston Red Sox franchise and was supposed to be one of the team’s most productive players this season. 

The Red Sox had massive expectations for Anthony after a breakout rookie season in which the 22-year-old slashed .292/.396/.463 with eight home runs and 32 runs batted in across 71 games, but injuries have plagued the young outfielder in his sophomore season. 

Anthony has missed over a month after suffering what was initially believed to be a sprained ligament under his right ring finger, which was listed as a “right wrist sprain.” The 22-year-old star later described the injury as a “partially torn ring finger ligament” during an interview. 

Though it seemed that Anthony was making progress toward returning to the field, the young outfielder suffered a setback when he tried to swing a bat for the first time since his injury, experiencing discomfort. Despite it being almost two weeks later, Anthony has reportedly not made any progress since his setback, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

Anthony last appeared for the Red Sox on May 4 before being placed on the 10-day injured list. Though he struggled at the plate this season even before his injury, slashing .229/.354/.321 with one home run and five runs batted in across 30 games, Boston’s offense would surely benefit from having the star outfielder back in the lineup. 

There is still no timetable in place for Anthony’s return.
