Robert Saleh: Cam Ward made a bad decision, but he isn't reckless

After quarterback Cam Ward threw an interception in the end zone late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 12-7 loss to the Giants, Titans head coach Robert Saleh said that Ward has “to be smarter with the football.”

Saleh spent more time discussing Ward’s decision making during his Monday press conference. Saleh said that he thinks Ward has been “spot on” with his decisions in most respects, which makes it “unfortunate that one of his critical mistakes came on the last play of the game” but does not make Ward a reckless player with the ball.

“He gave him a bad ball,” Saleh said, via the team’s website. “Bad decision, not a reckless decision, bad decision, which I’m sure he recognizes. But Cam is far from reckless.”

Recklessness may not be Ward’s chief issue, but the simple fact for the Titans is that their offense is not productive enough to overcome even an occasional mistake. They’ve scored 37 points in three weeks and that number is going to need to climb for Ward to have a compelling case that he’s the long-term answer in Tennessee.
