Detroit — Right-hander River Ryan, one of the Tigers’ get-backs from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade, is getting closer to competition.

He’s been rehabbing a hamstring strain, but he’s started to throw bullpens.

“He’s doing great,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Friday, before the series opener against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park. “I watched video of his bullpen the other day. There’s a set of bullpens he’s going to do before gets to competition and live (BP). But the numbers are pretty high-popping. The velocity has been great (upper-90s) and he recovery has been even better.”

Hinch said it was too early to project where or if he might fit in with the Tigers down the stretch.

“We’ll sort that out,” he said. “We’ve got to get him to games and see where we’re at and where he’s at. The bounce-back bullpens, and he’s done it twice, is what interests me the most. I’d also like to meet him (laughs).”

Ryan, 27, is assigned to Triple-A Toledo.
