Reps extend 2025 budget capital implementation to December 2026

The House of Representatives has approved a further extension of the implementation period for capital projects and expenditures under the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

The extension followed a request from President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly for additional time to enable ministries, departments and agencies of government to complete ongoing infrastructure projects and other capital expenditures provided for in the 2025 budget.

The latest adjustment represents the fourth extension of the capital implementation deadline. The original deadline of December 31, 2025, was first moved to March 31, 2026, before being extended to June 30 and subsequently September 30, 2026.

The amendment bill was considered and passed by lawmakers through accelerated readings during plenary. The extension was aimed at ensuring that ongoing capital projects are not abandoned as a result of funding and implementation challenges.

Following the approval, federal ministries, departments and agencies now have until December 31, 2026, to utilise and execute capital allocations provided under the 2025 Appropriation Act.
