The Boston Red Sox made another offseason roster move Tuesday, trading left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league right-hander Juan Garcia. The transaction came after Boston designated Rivera for assignment Monday to create space on its 40-man roster.

Rivera, 23, made his major league debut during the 2026 season and appeared in four games for the Red Sox, including three starts. He finished with an 0-1 record and a 6.30 ERA at the major league level.

But his minor league numbers demonstrated why another organization might be interested in acquiring him.

Rivera Had Better Results In The Minors

Rivera spent time with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester during the 2026 season.

Another Red Sox trade: LHP Eduardo Rivera has been traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league RHP Juan García, I’m told.

Across 26 minor league appearances, including five starts, he posted a 7-2 record and a 2.59 ERA. He also recorded 71 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings, demonstrating the ability to miss bats against developing professional hitters.

The contrast between those numbers and his limited major league results suggests Rivera remains an interesting developmental player.

Boston, however, faced a roster decision after designating him for assignment. Trading Rivera allowed the organization to receive a prospect rather than risk losing the pitcher without a return.

Garcia Represents A Longer-Term Investment

The Red Sox acquired Garcia, an 18-year-old right-hander from Mexico who pitched in the Dominican Summer League during 2026.

Garcia finished with a 2-4 record and a 4.40 ERA across 11 starts. Those numbers do not establish him as a future major league contributor, but his age gives Boston considerable time to evaluate his development.

The Red Sox are effectively exchanging a pitcher who already reached the majors for a much younger arm with a longer developmental timeline. That approach creates both opportunity and uncertainty.

Garcia could improve significantly as he gains professional experience, but there is no guarantee he will advance through the organization.

Boston Continues Reshaping Its Roster

The Red Sox have already made several decisions since the season ended, including exercising Garrett Whitlock’s club option and preparing for the departure of free agents.

Rivera’s trade is smaller than those developments, but it reflects the ongoing work required to manage a 40-man roster. Boston had to make room for other players and chose to move a young pitcher who had demonstrated minor league potential.

The return is a prospect who remains years away from establishing his major league value. For the Red Sox, the transaction represents a modest but potentially interesting investment in future pitching depth.
