Red Sox trade proposal moves Marcelo Mayer for $105 million disgruntled superstar

· · 2 min read

Reports are once again indicating that the Arizona Diamondbacks are frustrated with superstar Ketel Marte.

Marte, one of the better players in Major League Baseball, has hardly missed any games this year, so Arizona being upset with him, if those reports are true, doesn’t really make much sense. Regardless, if that really is the case and he’s available, there are many teams around baseball that could use him, even ones that probably shouldn’t be making trades right now.

One of those teams would be the Boston Red Sox, and one writer recently proposed the idea of Boston going on the trade for him. The problem here is that it would require giving up a rather sizable haul, but it’s still a trade the Red Sox should look to make if possible.

Diamondbacks get: Marcelo Mayer, Jake Bennett, John Holobetz

“When the two sides were talking in the offseason, Marcelo Mayer was the sticking point for the Red Sox in ultimately not getting the deal done. However, with the way things have transpired, it’s not hard to envision that Breslow — especially in a state of desperation — might be more inclined to deal the former first-round pick and Boston’s current starting shortstop. Meanwhile, Arizona’s pitching depth organizationally can get a huge boost from the Red Sox’ elite depth in terms of arms, as well as Breslow’s confidence in continuing to replenish that pipeline,” Cody Williams wrote.

The idea of moving on from Marcelo Mayer right now might not be a popular one for most Red Sox fans. I understand why they don’t want to trade him, but it’s also important to remember the type of player Marte is.

Mayer hasn’t proven at the big-league level that he can be a confident player just yet, so getting Marte for him would honestly be a really good deal to make.
