When the Boston Red Sox moved on from Rafael Devers, it seemed to be one of the worst moves the franchise has ever made.

While the most recent bad move the Red Sox made prior to that was moving on from Mookie Betts, this was right up there. 

Nobody agreed with the decision to move Devers, though fast forward to a year now, and it doesn’t seem to be as bad a decision as it once was. The only problem is that the Red Sox didn’t move on from Devers because they didn’t think he was going to be a good player anymore, but because they didn’t know what to do with him and Alex Bregman at third base.

Interestingly enough, the Red Sox are actually being proven right about that decision, with reports now indicating that the San Francisco Giants are very willing to move on from Devers in a trade at the deadline.

“The most obvious players for the Giants to move would be two of their potential free agents, second baseman Luis Arraez and left-hander Robbie Ray. It’s doubtful they could swing quality deals for expensive and underperforming veterans such as first baseman Rafael Devers and shortstop Willy Adames. The team has zero plans to part with ace right-hander Logan Webb, one source said,” Ken Rosenthal wrote.

It’s crazy to see how poorly Devers has played this year, especially after what we saw him do in Boston for most of his career. 

Devers has never been a great defender, but he can really swing it, so to see him struggle on the offensive side of things really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
