Red Sox move final game of series vs. Cubs to Tampa Bay's Tropicana Field to avoid nor'easter storm

A massive nor’easter storm has led the Boston Red Sox to take drastic measures for their regular-season finale. The Red Sox are moving their final game in the series against the Chicago Cubs from Fenway Park to the Tampa Bay Rays‘ Tropicana Field in order to avoid the storm, which is set to hit the northeastern United States this weekend.

The game, which was originally scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, will now take place on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in Tampa. The team announced the move on Friday, shortly before the second game of a doubleheader between the Red Sox and the Cubs. Tickets will be fully refunded, per the team.

Friday’s Cubs-Sox doubleheader was also a choice made in connection with the storm: Earlier this week, the Red Sox adjusted the series against the Cubs by moving Sunday’s game to Friday as part of a split doubleheader.

Both teams will travel to Florida after the end of the second game in the doubleheader, with the Red Sox citing “the safety of both traveling parties.”

In a statement, Rays CEO Ken Babby said that the team was “proud to support” MLB by hosting the game, citing a desire to help “ensure fans can enjoy this matchup despite the weather challenges in the Northeast,” via Ryan Bass of MLB.TV.

Babby noted that the Rays are familiar with weather challenges, as the team had to play the entire 2025 season in an alternate venue after Tropicana Field’s roof was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton in 2024.

“When Tropicana Field was damaged, clubs throughout the league stepped up to support our organization during an incredibly challenging time,” Babby said, via Bass. “We’re grateful for that solidarity and are pleased to return the favor by welcoming the Cubs, Red Sox, and their fans to Tropicana Field on Sunday.”

This weekend’s nor’easter is set to bring high winds and heavy rain across the northeast, with potential floods expected along the coasts. Multiple advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service, starting Friday and running through Sunday morning.

Boston is not the only area that is expected to be affected: The storm will hit New York City as well, which led the New York Yankees to adjust their final regular-season series as well. The Yankees, which were set to host the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend, switched to a doubleheader on Friday, with the final game in the series still set to take place in the Bronx on Sunday.
