Anthony left Boston’s Game 1 loss Tuesday after experiencing discomfort in his right hand. The 22-year-old was batting leadoff as the designated hitter in his playoff debut before being replaced by a pinch hitter in the sixth inning of Boston’s 9-0 loss.
Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Anthony felt discomfort after a couple of check swings. The outfielder previously missed nearly four months this season because of a partially torn ligament on his right ring finger.

“You’ll get a zinger every once in a while where you feel something, it’s fine, it goes away,” Tracy said Tuesday after the game. “Today some stuff happened that was more serious and was uncomfortable.”
With Boston facing elimination Wednesday, Jahmai Jones will bat leadoff and serve as the designated hitter.
Anthony batted .245 with five home runs, 15 RBIs and a .735 OPS in 55 games this season after returning from his hand injury. He entered the postseason as one of baseball’s top young players.
