Red Sox Magic Number: When Will They Clinch Postseason Spot?
The Boston Red Sox’s loss to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night shook up the American League wild card race.
The Red Sox’s loss did not change their standing, but it helped push the Rangers past the Toronto Blue Jays in the standings. The Rangers are now the first team out of the postseason, trailing the Cleveland Guardians by 1 1/2 games. The Blue Jays are now 2 games out of a postseason spot. With the Rangers and Blue Jays swapping spots, the Red Sox’s magic number did not change.
Magic Number To Clinch Postseason Berth: 5
The Boston Red Sox can simply win five games in the final 11 games of the year and be guaranteed to be playing baseball in October. However, they would prefer to punch their ticket well before that. Luckily for the Red Sox, they can help themselves out a little extra this week.
Red Sox Magic Number: When Will
The Red Sox need any combination of wins and losses by the first team out of the postseason to equal five. Right now, that team could be the Rangers, Blue Jays or Baltimore Orioles. Red Sox fans should be rooting against all three of those teams the rest of the way.
Who Will Red Sox Play In Wild Card Round?
Even though winning the division is not mathematically impossible, it is extremely unlikely. The Red Sox trail by 9 1/2 games with 11 games left to play. They are essentially locked in as the No. 5 seed in the American League postseason.
That means they will play the top wild card team, which, at the moment, is the New York Yankees. The Red Sox would have to travel to the Bronx for that best-of-three series, but there’s a slight chance that they won’t face the Yankees.
The Yankees trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 3 1/2 games in the American League East, and will play a four-game series against the Rays starting next Tuesday. If the Yankees can win the division, the Red Sox would head to Tropicana Field for a wild card series against the Rays.
