The Boston Red Sox recently clinched a postseason berth. 

The AL East club is guaranteed a spot in the American League Wild Card race. 

As things stand, Boston is likely to travel to Yankee Stadium for a best-of-three series against the New York Yankees. 

Who will play second base for the Red Sox in the postseason? 

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller wrote Sunday that it’s a “travesty” that the Red Sox didn’t address their infield needs at the trade deadline. 

“Six unique players have made at least 42 appearances at either second base or shortstop for the Red Sox this season, and let’s just say that’s not because they are drowning in fantastic options,” Miller wrote. 

Players the Red Sox could consider for their starting second base job are Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Sogard, and Andruw Monasterio. 

Kiner-Falefa seems to have a leg up on the competition. The veteran started all three games of Boston’s most recent series against the Tampa Bay Rays. 

However, with an 82 OPS+ and just two home runs, he offers limited value on offense.

“At least Trevor Story is hitting drastically better since returning from the IL in late August. He’ll surely be Boston’s starting shortstop in the postseason,” Miller added. 

It seems probable that the Red Sox will be in the market for a new second baseman this offseason.

Especially if the second base group they have now drastically hurts their chances of making a deep postseason run.
