Real Madrid fans in fresh ‘Negreira League’ claims after Real Betis wondergoal disallowed vs Barcelona

· · 1 min read

Supporters of La Liga giants Real Madrid have flooded to social media on Saturday evening. This comes to make clear their collective disillusionment with the officiating in Spanish football’s top-flight.

The headline fixture of the weekend in La Liga is currently being contested in Seville, between high-flying Real Betis, and reigning champions Barcelona.

The latter currently boast the advantage, leading by two goals to one. This comes after Betis saw what looked set to be a stunning equaliser disallowed following a VAR check.

After Giovani Lo Celso directed a remarkable left-footed effort into the top corner of the visitors’ net, referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea was sent to the pitchside monitor. From here, the man in charge decided that a handball in the lead-up to the goal left him with little choice but to rule Lo Celso’s finish out.

Betis, though, were left fuming, with the intervention having come a full 15 seconds before the ball hit the net. With some having also pointed towards a push on the part of Gerard Martín on the guilty Cucho Hernández, chatter has in turn spread like wildfire across the Spanish football landscape.

And as alluded to above, quick to add their collective anger to the mix were those of a Real Madrid persuasion, labelling La Liga ‘The Negreira League’ for the latest occasion:
