Real Madrid custodian reveals why Mourinho is already making his mark – “He asks for discipline”

Real Madrid have a squad that has mostly not worked under Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese tactician’s first spell coming a very long time ago.

Since then, Los Blancos have moved on from most of those players, but there is one player in the current squad who has worked with him elsewhere.

Jose and Thibaut Courtois spent a few seasons together at Chelsea, back when the Belgian was still making a name for himself.

The 34-year-old has now offered fresh insight into Mourinho’s early influence at Real Madrid, praising the Portuguese manager’s demanding approach.

Speaking about life under Mourinho, the Belgian goalkeeper highlighted the standards being set from day one, insisting that the manager’s focus on discipline and the collective is exactly what the team need.

As quoted by RM4Arab, Courtois said that Mourinho expects complete commitment from every player and consistently puts the team’s interests ahead of individual ambitions.

“Mourinho is a coach who demands a lot. He asks for discipline a lot. For him, the team’s interests come before the players’ interests. These are important things for us to win,” he said.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper also praised Mourinho’s personality, explaining that his honesty has always been one of his biggest strengths.

“He is a great coach and a very kind person. He tells the truth as it is, and that’s what I like. I think this is the path we have to follow,” he continued.

These comments align with Mourinho’s reputation throughout his career, with discipline, accountability and a winning mentality following him wherever he has gone.

Courtois also reflected on his previous spell working under Mourinho at Chelsea, where the pair won the Premier League together.

“We were together at Chelsea, and we won the Premier League together. I have great memories with him, and I’m happy to work under him again,” he recalled.

The Belgian made it clear that he is excited about the reunion and optimistic about what lies ahead.

“We hope we work well together and spend great years here,” he concluded.

Courtois’ public backing is an encouraging sign for Mourinho, since it comes from one of the dressing room’s leaders.

Many players in the Real Madrid squad could be fazed by the reputation that precedes Jose wherever he goes.

Courtois’ words could therefore help calm those nerves, and the Belgian could act as the bridge that eases Madrid’s transition into the new era.

The 34-year-old suffered an injury against Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is recovering from it.

He will be keen to return to 100 percent sooner rather than later and help Jose Mourinho build his new project at Los Blancos.
