While the Rays make $3.1 million decision onTampa Bay Rays failed to capture their first World Series title last week, 2026 was still a success for the franchise. Winning their third AL pennant in team history capped off an outstanding campaign. As the team’s new ownership looks forward to their first winter in charge, the Rays front office has already begun to make some smart moves. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale on X, formerly Twitter, Tampa Bay has picked up the contract option of Gold Glove-winning shortstop Taylor Walls.

“One day after winning the Gold Glove award, Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls has his $3.1 million option picked up,” Nightengale posted Monday afternoon.

As the Rays’ primary shortstop, Walls hit .222 with two home runs and 36 RBI, to go along with 21 stolen bases. While his offensive ability is limited, Walls’ Gold Glove win shows just how valuable he is to Tampa Bay. A career-high 3.5 WAR was driven mostly by his defense, not to mention solid baserunning when he did reach base. While many Rays fans have cried out for an upgrade at the position, it’s clear that Walls is still in the franchise’s immediate plans.

Bringing the 30-year-old back makes sense based on a number of factors. This winter could be a longer one, as the threat of a lockout looms over the majors. The CBA between the players and the league ends on December 1st. It doesn’t look as if the two sides will come to an agreement before it ends. So, the Rays will likely try and take care of most of their pressing offseason business before a new CBA is locked in. Will Walls keep his starting role ahead of the potential work stoppage? Or will he just be another piece of the puzzle next season?
