Rangers appoint McInnes following Rohl departure

Rangers have appointed Derek McInnes as their new manager from Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts. 

McInnes, who missed out on the top-flight title with Hearts on the final day of last season, has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Glasgow giants. 

The news comes after it was also confirmed earlier on Wednesday that Danny Rohl had completed a switch to Austrian side RB Salzburg. 

During his playing days, McInnes made 34 appearances for Rangers, and turned down an approach from them in December 2017 when he was in charge of Aberdeen. 

However, he has now followed Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox this summer, and the 54-year-old acknowledged the enormity of the role he had taken on. 

“It is a real honour to become the manager of Rangers Football Club,” McInnes told Rangers’ official club website. 

“It is no secret that I grew up a Rangers supporter, and I am convinced this is the right time to take on this prestigious role. 

The demands here are clear, and our supporters rightfully have high expectations.

“It is up to me, my staff and my players to meet those expectations, and have this club performing as it should.

“There is hard work ahead, but already the preparations have begun, and I am looking forward to meeting the current squad in the coming weeks and welcoming some new faces.”

Joining him will be assistants Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin and Craig Clark.

McInnes is Rangers’ third permanent manager in the last year, with Russell Martin and Rohl also taking charge of the club during the last 12 months. 

Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin and Craig Clark will assist McInnes, who will look to end Rangers’ wait for a first Scottish Premiership since 2020-21 under Steven Gerrard. 

“I am delighted to welcome Derek to Rangers,” Rangers Chairman Andrew Cavenagh added. 

“He is someone we have always rated highly, and we believe he is exactly what this club needs at this moment in time.

“His deep Scottish and Rangers experience are important for us. He knows how to win in this league, and he is coming off an extremely strong season with Hearts.”
